Nadal pulls out of Australian Open

This month’s Australian Openhas lost a major drawcard with the withdrawal of Spanish teenage sensation Rafael Nadal. The 19-year-old said at a press conference in Barcelona that he was not yet fit enough to compete in a grand slam tournament.

Nadal is currently recovering from a foot injury sustained towards the later stages of last season that saw him withdraw from the season ending Masters Cup in Shanghai in November.

The world No.2 said, "I'm quite happy with the way I have recovered and the foot has improved quite a lot recently and I can now play almost without any pain,"

"But I still need to recover full confidence in my foot and find that spark needed to play at the top level."
