Hewitt and Federer move into US Open quarters

World numbers 1 and 3 are on a collision course at the 2005 US Open after the defending champion and 2001 winner both eased into the quarterfinals today. Federer was made to work before overcoming Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4 while Hewitt had little trouble ousting No. 15 seed Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

Federer will next play 11th-seeded David Nalbandian or Davide Sanguinetti while Hewitt will face Jarkko Nieminen who defeated Spain's Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 7-6 (6), 6-3 to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Federer has extended his winning streak to 32 matches on hardcourt and is unbeaten since suffering a semifinal loss to Spanish teenager Raphael Nadal in the semifinals of the French Open at Roland Garros.

Hewitt said after beating Hrbaty, "I got out of the blocks well today. I went out there with a game plan and just executed it. I did what I needed to do and didn't feel that under pressure."

When asked about Hrbaty's black and pink shirt which has cutouts below each shoulder that look like a peekaboo bra, Hewitt said, "I wouldn't wear it. But it made it a lot easier for me to beat him today,"

"I just couldn't lose to a bloke wearing a shirt like that."
