Melbourne Cup Day, known as 'The Race That Stops A Nation' has been declared a public holiday for Victoria Australia. It is the race that truly captures the interest of the Australian public. Melbourne Cup Day is all about the race, the atmosphere and the fashion. The Group One Melbourne Cup is run over the grueling distance of 3200m (2 miles). Seventeen horses raced in the first Melbourne Cup in 1861. The prize for the race was £170 in cash and a gold watch. The first Melbourne Cup winner was Archer, where a crowd of 4,000 watched the race.

The winner of the 2006 Melbourne Cup was Delta Blues, ridden by Yasunari Iwata. Delta Blues was owned, trained and ridden by Japanese connections, confirming that the Melbourne Cup is a true international race on the global racing calendar. In recent years, the Melbourne Cup has seen horses travel from the UK, Ireland, United Arab Emirates, Japan, Europe and South Africa, to compete in the great race. Other internationally trained horses to have won the race in recent years include Vintage Crop and Media Puzzle, both of whom were trained by the Irish master Dermot Weld.

Phar Lap
Phar Lap, considered the greatest racehorse the world has ever seen, is one of Australia’s most important icons. In his four years of his racing career, Phar Lap won 37 of the 51 races including the prestigious Melbourne Cup in 1930. In 1930, someone tried to shoot the Phar lap. In 1932, Tommy Woodcock, the horse's trainer for the North American visit, found Phar Lap in severe pain and carrying a high temperature. Within a few hours, Phar Lap died. There are many different stories as to the possible cause of death, but most people suspect that Phar Lap was poisoned.

Makybe Diva
Makybe Diva is a British-bred racehorse that was taken to Australia where she became the first thoroughbred to win the prestigious Melbourne Cup three times in a row 2003, 2004, & 2005. Apart from her three Melbourne Cups, she also won the a Sydney Cup, Australian Cup and a Cox Plate. Makybe Diva is the highest stakes-earner in Australasian horse-racing history, with total winnings of around AU$14,000,000. "The Diva" is one of only five horses, within the 145 years of racing history, to have won the Melbourne Cup more than once.

Bart Cummings
Trainer Bart Cummings will be forever remembered as "The Cup's King". In a career that is still churning out Group One winners, Bart's first success of an amazing eleven wins in the Melbourne Cup, was in 1965 with Light Fingers.

In the years 1965, 1966, 1974, 1975, and 1991, Cummings trained both the first and second place winners in the Melbourne Cup.
