2005 US Open Tennis Fixed Odds Betting Preview
World number 1 Roger Federer will be shooting for his second successive Grand Slam title when he attempts to successfully defend his US Open crown at Flushing Meadows. His quest for a successful title defense begins on Monday when the reigning Wimbledon and US Open champion takes on Czech Ivo Minar.
Federer is without question the man to beat after extending his winning streak to 18 matches after once again beating American Andy Roddick at the Cincinnati Masters a week ago. The Swiss master hasnt been beaten since being ousted at the French Open at Roland Garros by Spanish teenage sensation Rafael Nadal who is on the opposite side of the draw at this years US Open.
Standing in Federers way will be the usual suspects with his Australian Open conqueror big serving Russian Marat Safin who won the US Open in 2000 and Australian 2001 US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt. Safin has had his US Open preparation interrupted by a persistent knee injury while Hewitt was struck down by both injury and a stomach virus.
Hewitt the number 3 seed looms as the greatest obstacle for Federer. The pair is seeded to meet in the semi finals of the US open having played out last years final which saw Federer a straight sets victor 6-0, 7-6, 6-0.
On the other side of the draw, Americans Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and the rising star of world tennis Rafael Nadal will battle it out for a Grand Slam final appearance.
Roddick the 2002 US Open champion has a poor record against both Hewitt and Federer. Roddick beat Hewitt 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) to earn his first victory over the Australian since June 2004 at last weeks Cincinnati Masters, with Hewitt far from fully fit after a stomach virus which saw him retire from his first-round match in Montreal the previous week.
Nadal the current French Open champion is best suited on clay. Certainly capable of reaching the latter stages of the event but is a risk as his first round exit at the hands of Tomas Berdych in Cincinnati showed.
The 35-year-old Andre Agassi has all the talent but his aging body will need some short sharp matches in the first week to give him a serious tilt at a fourth US open victory.
In short, the scene is set for a successful title defense by Federer.
